On Wednesday, 4/12 at noon we hosted a pizza lunch accompanied by a presentation where we showed the department survey results, and discussed various pieces of professional career advice given by our seminar speakers each week.
Here, we see that students are interested in going to see an ocean liner the most. Based on this, we are planning an excursion to the intrepid museum this Saturday, 4/15. It will only be $30 per person because the department is allowing us to subsidize the trip, giving students over 60% off the price.
Dr. Atul Kelkar suggests to get out of your comfort zone, and collaborate with others in your field because interdisciplinary fields are where real innovations occur. Dr. Igor Papratony got his teaching position at Dartmouth because he cited the work of the professors he later worked with to get him the job. Dr. Srinivas Garimella said that as a young professor, you need plenty of fresh ideas to get your research going. Don't worry about choosing the wrong job, it will likely give you the conviction to get the job that you really want.
Dr. Nancy Sottos suggests that in order to get a professorship, there are three things you should focus on. (1) Get a valuable teaching experience, more that just being a TA, pursue teaching a summer class where you can be in charge of the class making your own exams. (2) Mentor an undergrad, this shows that you are a good leader and willing to teach others. (3) Your publication record is fundamental to getting a good teaching position.
